“Tutti pensavano che mi sarei suicidata dopo che Picasso mi avesse lasciata, ma non l’ho fatto, per non dargli questa soddisfazione”

Dora Maar, artista e fotografa della corrente surrealista, conosciuta soprattutto come “la donna che piange” dipinta innumerevoli volte da Picasso. Il corpus fotografico delle opere della Maar diventa motivo di ispirazione. L’osservazione delle immagini si sedimenta nel gesto danzato. Il corpo si trasforma in un essere surreale. L’atmosfera delle immagini, dal sapore Lynchiano, genera la curiosità per ciò che non si vede, o si nasconde. Il corpo si muove, cerca spazio e luce. La vicenda personale della Maar resta un sottofondo, c’è ma non è protagonista, un’eco che risuona nelle poche parole di un testo di una canzone.
Progetto selezionato in residenza per Around a Process of Making 2023 sull’ isola di Stromboli. Poi sviluppato tra la Sicilia e la Lombardia. A giugno 24, a Stromboli, la versione Studio di TheoDora va in scena in site–specific su uno dei tetti dell’Isola. A luglio 24 invece lo Studio per spazi teatrali a Performare Festival.

Amalia Borsellino ha collaborato con artisti come Peter Jasko, Clara Furey, Silvia Gribaudi, La Fura dels Baus, Emilio Calcagno, Virgilio Sieni e Roberto Zappalà. Dal 2018 danza per la Compagnie ECO di Emilio Calcagno (Francia) e tra il 2017 e il 2021 è stata assistente artistica e danzatrice per Virgilio Sieni. Dal 2017 al 2019 ha lavorato come performer, coreografa e docente per il Teatro Stabile di Catania.
È membro del Collettivo SicilyMade e Artista Associata di Scenario Pubblico – Centro di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale. Nel 2024 vince il premio BTS Between The Seas, residenza artistica ad Atene per The Three of Us. Nel 2023 avvia il suo primo progetto solista e viene selezionata per Around a Process of Making da Marosi Stromboli. Dal 2021 è co-direttrice artistica di Performare Festival e collabora come docente e danzatrice per il progetto internazionale Yallah Danse! in Algeria.

Dora Maar, surrealist artist and photographer, is best known as “the weeping woman” painted countless times by Picasso. The photographic corpus of Maar’s works becomes a source of inspiration. The observation of these images settles into the danced gesture. The body transforms into a surreal being. The atmosphere of the images, with a Lynchian flavour, sparks curiosity for what is unseen or hidden. The body moves, seeking space and light. Maar’s personal story remains in the background — present but not the protagonist — an echo resonating in the few words of a song’s lyrics.
The project was selected for a residency during Around a Process of Making 2023 on the island of Stromboli, then developed between Sicily and Lombardy. In June 2024, on Stromboli, the studio version of TheoDora premiered as a site-specific performance on one of the island’s rooftops. In July 2024, the studio version for theatre spaces was presented at Performare Festival.

Since 2018 she has been dancing for Compagnie ECO by Emilio Calcagno (France) and from 2017 to 2021 she was artistic assistant and dancer for Virgilio Sieni. From 2017 to 2019 she worked as a performer, choreographer, and teacher for Teatro Stabile di Catania. She is a member of the SicilyMade Collective and an Associated Artist at Scenario Pubblico – National Centre of Significant Interest. In 2024 she won the BTS Between The Seas Award, an artistic residency in Athens for The Three of Us. In 2023 she launched her first solo project and was selected for Around a Process of Making by Marosi Stromboli. Since 2021 she has been the co-artistic director of Performare Festival and collaborates as a teacher and dancer for the international project Yallah Danse! in Algeria.
